This book, in the Surgical Clinics of North America series, provides an excellent overview of the investigation, diagnosis and management of pancreatic malignancy. The contributions are from recognized authorities in major North American centres. The evidence-based approach is very valuable and the chapters are well referenced. The majority of the chapters deal with ductal adenocarcinoma; neuroendocrine tumours, ampullary tumours and tumours of less malignant potential are not discussed. The management of ductal adenocarcinoma is dealt with in a logical fashion, commencing with imaging modalities, and then dealing with technical considerations including separate chapters on portal vein resection and tumours of the body and tail. Adjuvant and neoadjuvant chemotherapy, radiotherapy and palliation, including palliative chemotherapy, are discussed in detail. The final chapters deal very well with Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasm (IPMN) and cystic tumours, both areas in which there have been significant recent developments in classification, investigation and management. For each there is an excellent diagnostic and management algorithm. Overall, this book provides an excellent update and guide for the practicing pancreatic surgeon and surgical trainees.
