BJS wishes to encourage young surgeons to take an interest in medical publishing. To this end the BJS Society has established Editor Assistant bursaries. Successful candidates are usually at or near the end of higher surgical training, or recently appointed to a substantive post. Although no previous publishing experience is expected, the successful candidate has scientific curiosity, writes well and has a facility for constructive criticism.

In position, each Editor Assistant is assigned a project to work on throughout their year of service and which they present at the BJS Council summer meeting in July. These projects are presented here for your interest, along with some brief details of the authors.

Kjetil Søreide (2008-2009)

Dr Søreide served as an Editor Assistant in 2008/2009. At the time he was a surgical trainee in the Department of Surgery at Stavanger University Hospital and held the position of Associate Professor at the Institute of Surgical Sciences, University of Bergen. With several publications and projects in GI oncology and a keen interest in trauma and emergency surgery, he has editorial experience from national/Scandinavian journals (co-Editor-in-Chief for Scandinavian Journal of Trauma Resuscitation and Emergency Medicine), and serves as editorial board member and peer reviewer for several journals. He has been an editor with the BJS since 2010.  His project was on Factors influencing surgeons' choice of journal for article submission.  Click for the background first and then for the results.
