Seven trials including 450 patients were available for analysis. Early ERCP was associated with a non significant reduction in overall complications (relative risk 0.76, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.41 to 1.04) and an increase in mortality (1.13, 0.23 to 5.63). The results were not changed by subgroup analysis according to predicted severity of pancreatitis
