The rate of incisional hernia after three years was lower after mesh insertion in this study that included 150 procedures: 7.2 versus 18.5 per cent, P=0.03. There was no difference in infection rates, but patients with mesh had more prolonged wound healing (8 versus 5 weeks, P=0.03), and more pain in the first six weeks (P=0.04).
