A total of 153 patients were divided into three groups: a standard group fasted as normal from the night before surgery; a group given 400ml carbohydrate drink the night before and on the morning of surgery; and a group given the equivalent volume of water. Recovery after surgery was similar in all groups.Pubmed Link
