Eighty patients were randomly allocated a proton pump inhibitor or placebo after their surgery for one year. The active drug reduced the rate of benign anastomotic stricture from 45 to 13 per cent (P=0.001); however, the size of staple cartridge used for the anastomosis was also a significant factor.
