Conclusion

There were 589 patients studied in three RCTs and four prospective studies. Patients who had laparoscopic lavage had fewer infections and shorter hospital stay, but also more intra-abdominal abscesses and long term urgent reoperations. The stoma rate was 90 per cent after resection versus 14 per cent after lavage.
