Some 222 patients were randomized 3:1 to drug-coated or plain angioplasty. Patency at twelve months was better with the drug-coated balloon (83.9 per cent) compared to the plain balloon (60.6 per cent, P<0.001). Similarly, freedom from target lesion revascularization at twelve months was improved: 5.9 versus 16.7 per cent, P=0.014.
