Conclusion

Twenty patients undergoing oesophagectomy for cancer were randomly allocated this peptide hormone with pleiotropic properties. Ghrelin stimulated the appetite and led to an increased oral intake, resulting in less perioperative weight loss (1 vs. 3 per cent, P=0.019).
